Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China in late 2019. Early COVID-19 cases were linked to a live animal market in Wuhan, China, suggesting that the virus was initially transmitted from animals to humans. The virus has since spread extensively in China and worldwide. On February 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) named the infectious disease triggered by 2019-nCov as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The risk of serious disease and death in COVID-19 cases increases with age. As such, older people, and people with other medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), may be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill. The incubation period ranges from 2 to 14 days.

How to protect yourself and others
As of today, no vaccine exists to prevent coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which makes it crucial to protect oneself and others against the virus in several ways. Since the disease is transmitted by inhalation or contact with infected droplets via breathing, coughing and talking; preventive measures must be taken to avoid exposure to the virus such as:
Wash your Hands
Wash your hands multiple times a day (for 20 seconds) with water and soap
Social distancing or physical distancing
Practice social distancing or physical distancing by keeping space between yourself and others (6ft) when going out
Stay home as much as possible and limit social outings
Cover Coughs and Sneezes
Cover your cough by flexing your elbow or using tissue when you cough or sneeze
Wear a Face Mask
Wear face masks in public areas to decrease the risks of contamination. Masks protect us and others by keeping our germs to ourselves
Clean and Disinfect
Use hand sanitizer when possible and always clean surface areas with disinfectants
- Respecting and following national and local authorities COVID-19 guidelines
- Staying informed on the latest developments about COVID-19 via government channels, local news/media
- Lastly, but most importantly, if you have a fever, cough and/or difficulty breathing, self-isolate yourself from others and seek medical attention in advance
Shortness of breath
What are the severe complications?
Acute respiratory distress syndrome, pneumonia in both lungs, multi-organ failure and in some cases death
How is COVID-19 transmitted?
The virus is transmitted from person-to-person via direct contact (within about 6 feet) through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes (particles > 5 micrometers), or aerosols (particles < 5 micrometers). A person can also get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes. The risks of contamination are also higher for people who are in close contacts with people who live or have recently been in an area with ongoing spread of COVID-19; as well as go to places such as shopping malls with high population density and often difficulty in maintaining avoidance precautions.
